Saw Trades Update November 2016
Hopefully everyone had a great summer and are looking forward to 2017. The following are some points of interest in regards to the BC Saw Trades Program.
-   Scheduling 2017 classes for Year 1 & Year 2 are currently being planned out for early next spring by TRU.
-   TRU is currently accepting applications for the position of Saw Trades Instructor @ the Williams Lake Campus.
-   Recent revisions to Saw Trades test banks have shown very good results; with an 82% - 85% class average
-   Benchman Apprentices now @ 28 registered / another 20 – 30 waiting to register when much needed classes are scheduled.
-    On January 1, 2017 there will be a link on the ITA website for Certified Sawfilers; (formerly Circular Sawfiler) for those that meet the requirements of ITA, to challenge the Benchman C of Q exam.
-   What do Headfilers want more of in terms of review for Apprentices during their session @ school; IE:  Benefits of / how to best setup & use a Heat crawler on bandsaws, Stellite, welding practices…?
-   Bench course program soon to be put together by Greg Daykin; development of lesson plans & course curriculum. More bandsaw related equipment needed to offer complete program (see below)
Materials / Equipment Needed for Trade School:
-    complete Knee off newer Headsaw carriage (for Bench program)
-    6”- 8” Norpac bandsaw guides & 4 pin guide mounts (for Bench program)
-    Still in need of a Pony (board) Edger (for Sawfiler program)
…check your boneyards!  (TRU will issue a tax receipt for donated equipment.)
•   Lindsay Langill (former TRU Dean) has moved on; see attached updated Contacts List for his replacement.
If Apprentices or their Supervisor / Headfiler have any questions about the school or need help with their enrolment; check out the links below or don’t hesitate to call the appropriate person on the provided contact list.

My company has specialized in recruiting people for the forest industry since 1985, including sawfilers.

I am presently helping 3 sawmills look for qualified sawfilers: one in the northern interior, one in the central interior and one in the metro Vancouver area.

There is no cost to you, as my company’s services are paid for by the employers.

Please contact me by phone, so I can share the details about these positions, including locations.

General Discussion / ITA Saw Trades Update / August 2016

ITA Saw Trades Update August 2016

ITA hosted a workshop @ the Coast Capri Hotel in Kelowna BC on June 12 – 16, 2016 to review 4 test banks. The “team” consisted of Jennifer Booth / ITA, Greg Daykin TRU / Saw Trades Instructor, John Seed Headfiler / Halo Sawmill, Dana Norman Filing Room Manager / Downie timber, John Hebert Headfiler / Gorman Bros Lumber.
Great progress has been made with ITA facilitating workshops to update our exam banks; helping to make the test questions much clearer and up to date for Apprentices. To summarize the following are the sawfiling exam banks that have been revised / updated:
                                           October /2015    June /2016
                                 Level 1:     1                      1
                                  C of Q:     2                      1
             Bench Endorsement:     1                      2

•   Thanks to Colleen Rogan & Jennifer Booth from ITA for attending filers convention this past April in Kamloops BC; to provide information & updates to the attendees.
•   Fall school dates have been moved to summer of 2016: Year 1: July 18 – August 26
                                                                                                        Year 2: Aug 29 – September23
•   Benchman’s Endorsement / program is still being worked on, and date for a much needed course is yet to be determined
•   TRU is looking for an Instructor(s) for our Saw Trades Program as Greg Daykin will be retiring soon. If you are or know of someone that may be interested, please contact Lindsay Langill @ TRU for more information about the position.
The Saw Filing Trade school @ TRU is still in need of a small (pony edger) to demonstrate & test the Saw Filer Apprentices on Edger alignments. Any “donations” from a company to our saw trades program can be given a tax receipt from TRU. The Edger needs to be an older machine that does not have pilot flange bearings and under 4000 lbs in weight. If you know of a machine (even in your bone yard that is no longer of use - good project for the students to "clean up / repair & align"), please contact / leave message for:
Greg Daykin / Saw Trades Instructor @ TRU
   greg52@telus.net or gdaykin@tru.ca
     Trade School: 250-392-8113        Cel: 250-617-9553

Donations to TRU saw trades program: Thanks to Cut Tech / Burton Saw for donating “saw steel” to make straight edges & tension gauges, Simonds International for donating a “pallet” of finished circular saws & Gorman Bros Lumber donation of “120 thin plate saws”. This is a great help providing much need materials for our Instructor & Apprentices while @ trade school.

I provided handy links & a contacts list below, for the 3 groups that “steer” our Saw Trades Program. The goal is to open & improve the lines of communication between all involved making our Trade better for everyone.

2016 BC Saw Filers Convention Report

As we all know much has changed in the sawmilling industry and the sawfiling trade. Due to the down-turn in the lumber industry a few years ago, mills haven’t been sending many Apprentices to Trade School; combined with the increasing # for retirees, there is a renewed sense of urgency for training in the filing room.
Recently some classes been offered through Thompson Rivers University (TRU) @ Williams Lake Campus, many of the students have struggled with the C of Q exams and the majority (for at least one class) failing the final; Certificate of Qualification (C of Q). The Saw Trades Instructor (Greg Daykin) said that for the most part the students did quite well on the course content in the classroom & shop practical; there was an obvious problem with the exam banks.

ITA then put out a call to industry for Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) to review the exam banks that are on “file” that the Industry Training Authority (ITA) issue to the Apprentices for their final. 4 SME’s attended a workshop in Richmond: Jennifer Booth (ITA Program Development Officer), Greg Daykin, Dana Norman / Downie Timber, Heiko Spring West Fraser / 100 Mile & John Hebert / Gorman Bros Lumber. The exams were reviewed & revised as required with very good results as students have been taking the “revised exams’ and the majority of the Apprentices achieving  a passing mark. (As reported by ITA)  Another scheduled ITA workshop is planned in June 2016 to continue with a “team” of SME’s to review & revise C of Q exam for the Benchman endorsement; and the opportunity for qualified Sawfilers to challenge the C of Q soon.

March 16 of 2016 a meeting was held with Greg Daykin (Saw Trades Instructor) @ Downie Timber in Revelstoke and a follow up on April 14 @ TRU in Kamloops with Lindsay Langill / Dean of Trades . A proposal was made to TRU by Downie to offer Year 1 & Year 2 classes in Revelstoke, but due to vey tight budget constraints & the necessity to have at least 16 Apprentices / class it would not be feasible. Consideration is being investigated to offer the Benchman endorsement @ Downie due to the backlog (22 Apprentices in queue) and probably another 20 or more that have not yet registered.

Our existing Saw Trades Instructor / Greg Daykin & wife have plans to move out of Prince George soon, having purchased property in southern BC and have plans to officially retire; therefore the search is on for a replacement Instructor(s). There is possibility of a “wage top up”   by industry companies to help attract an Instructor. Lindsay was asked about the possibility of relocating the Saw Trades School to Kamloops to make it easier to attract an Instructor and more availability of accommodation for Apprentices; we have already have someone interested in the Instructors position. Lindsay is looking into the logistics of relocation to Kamloops
A Pony Edger is needed @ the Trade school for training of the Apprentices; Tax receipt issued by TRU for donations to programs.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Saw Trades program as they become available; I will send out a list of contacts & links for ITA & TRU & other information that may be helpful to your apprentices.
